10 Commandments of Social Media.

I am not a God, but I show thee the light. Thou might remember my name. I calleth myself social media.

I show thou steadfast love of thy people when thy follow these ten commandments. Know thy ten commandments well. For if thou do not follow, and thou make wrongful use of me, knowest that I shalt not tolerate it.

Thou shalt look upon thy social media as a labor of love, honor it well so that thy popularity is repaid in kind. Furthermore, thou shalt not steal other people’s parchments and pretend that thy words belong to thou.

The Google is watching and thou sins shalt be discovered.

Lastly thou shalt not use thy social media to bear false witness since thy waters shalt close and thou brand shalt sinkest to the bottom of the dead sea.

The 10 Commandments of Social Media.

  1. Thou shalt engage.Thou shalt not ignore social media unless, like Apple, thou hast a legion of disciples willing to do all thy work for thou. If not, thou must get involved.
  2. Thou shalt experiment to see what works for thy brand.Thou shalt use Twitter for rapid and frequent announcements – such as thy Virgin Blue announcement that it will use Twitter for pricing specials on airfares, Facebook to gather disciples and bookmarking sites with which to share thou’s amazing parchments.
  3. Thou must speak in thy tongues of everyday man. If thou hast never read Cluetrain, thou must hang thy head in shame. Thou art as old as Moses, but still art relevant to parting the waters that block thy passage towards creating content that sounds like it has been written by real people, not lawyers. Thou must dump thy annual reports, legally-approved copy, buzzwords and corporate speak and talk in the tongue of man.
  4. Thou shalt collect disciples. Thy disciples that will champion thy good word as spread by your brand. Thou can do this by preaching good stuff – stuff that is topical and compelling enough that thy people want to know about it.
  5. Thou shalt keep improving. Thy stuff is never good enough, and when thou think it is, thou must try harder. Raise thy standards - not because thou need to best someone else but to keep pace with those that best thou. I tell thou, thy audience are filtering junk content from thy lives. If thou’s efforts are deleted, there is no point in continuing. Thou is wasting valuable parchment.
  6. Thou should fear not controversy. Thou’s lawyers love a decent catfight. Tis the way thy art kept amused. A thumbs-down on thou’s post means people are paying attention. Let thy hear your good word. Thou shalt encourage debate (but avoid getting a complete flogging).
  7. Knowest this, what thou see is not what thou get. Behind thy scenes, out of thou view, thy people will talk about thou. Let this not concern thou, my friend.  Let thy people share your content. Let thy people talk about it. Let thy people enter into the conversation with thou.
  8. Thou shalt provide a human face to your brand or thy people that would be disciples will leave thou, turning towards another preacher. Thou must leave thy ivory tower, and walk amongst thy people. Thou must also dump all thy sales pitches.
  9. Thou shalt refrain from firing off threatening lawyer letters when thy public, in a forum, say your brand is utter crap. Rather, thou must engage. Thou must be honest. If thou has stuffed up, admit it, tellest thy people how the problem shalt be fixed, and create more disciples for your brand.
  10. Thou must admit that other people have good parchment. Thou should remark on it. Thank thy people for sharing it. Thou shalt create relationships with thy people who are not thou customers since thy relationships are not without value. Thou must remember thy social media art a labor of love.

In other Moses news, he did not part the Red Sea, after all.
