Google Gets Sued, Again

Google Gets Sued, Again

A Japanese woman has got her knickers in a knot over Google Street View.

She is suing Google over claims the search giant displayed images of underwear hanging on her washing line on its Street View mapping service.

The unnamed woman is seeking damages of 600,000 Yen, claiming that the images had caused her psychological distress, resulting in losing her job and the changing of her residence.

Japan’s Mainichi newspaper reported news of the suit, highlighting that the lady first saw the photo on Google’s Street View service in Spring when she performed a search on her own house.

It is claimed that upon discovering the pictures of underwear on her washing line, the woman’s existing obsessive compulsive disorder worsened as a result of increased anxiety, leading her to feel as if her life was being secretly recorded.

Amazon and Google At War

Amazon and Google At War

INTERNET giant Google opened an online electronic book store overnight in a heavyweight entry into a booming market long dominated by Kindle-maker Amazon.

Google eBookstore was being rolled out in the US featuring the Mountain View, California-based company’s massive library of digitised works online at books.google.com.

“We believe it will be the world’s largest e-books library,” said Google spokeswoman Jeannie Hornung. “Including the free books, there are more than three million.”

Hundreds of thousands of digital books from leading publishers such as Macmillan, Random House and Simon & Schuster will be for sale in the eBookstore, which Google said will expand internationally next year.

Google e-books will be kept online in the Internet “cloud” and be available for reading from any Web-linked computer or using free applications on gadgets such as Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch or on smart phones running Google’s Android software.

Google Sets New Internet Traffic Record

Google Sets New Internet Traffic Record

In their earnings call last week, Google announced a record 2010 third-quarter revenue of $USD7.29 billion (up 23% from last year).

The market rejoiced and Google shares shot past $USD615 giving the company a market cap of more than $USD195 billion.

This month, Google broke an equally impressive Internet traffic record — gaining more than 1% of all Internet traffic share since January, according to research by Arbor Networks.

If Google were an ISP, as of this month it would rank as the second largest carrier on the planet.

Google New Internet Traffic Record

Google now represents an average 6.4% of all Internet traffic around the world. This number grows even larger (to as much as 8-12%) if estimates of traffic offloaded by the increasingly common Google Global Cache (GGC) deployments are included and error in Arbor’s data due to the extremely high degree of Google edge peering with consumer networks.

These numbers represent increased market share — Google is growing considerably faster than overall Internet volumes which are already increasing 40-45% each year.

Facebook Or Google – Who Will Dominate?

Facebook Or Google – Who Will Dominate?

Back in March 2010, Hitwise reported that Facebook had surpassed Google in the US to become the most visited website. Sure, it was a week’s worth of data but the writing has been on the wall ever since.

Then in May we learned that in the UK, people are visiting social networks more than they’re visiting search engines. Facebook dominates the current crop of social networks, accounting for the majority (55%) of all social site visits. When compared to the wider web, Google got around 9.3% of all web traffic, while Facebook captured just over 7%.

But when UK stats for all search engines were stacked up with data from all social sites, social networks attracted .55% more traffic than search engines.

The writing on the wall started to get a whole lot larger.

According to Alexa, Google.com is ranked Number 1 globally and Facebook is ranked Number 2.

Google’s Predictions for Display Ads in 2015

Google’s Predictions for Display Ads in 2015

Players from Google’s display advertising team presented seven predictions on the outlook of display advertising for 2015, as part of Google’s “Watch This Space” campaign.

They were:

1. Video: 50% of display ads will include cost-per-view video. The prediction comes with the launch of two new video ad formats on Google’s YouTube: an “in-slate format” that allows users to choose video ads to view, and an “in-stream format” that auto-selects video ads and allows users to click out of the ad after a few seconds.

2. Real-time: 50% of ad buying will happen in real time. Instead of a passive price ceiling or automated bid price, Google sees a trend towards ad buyers bidding on display advertising on the fly.

3. Mobile: The most popular screen will be on-the-go. Google is banking on “media bridging” off-line and online advertising with tools like Google Goggles.

Google Instant Blacklists Terms

Google Instant Blacklists Terms

Google may have plunged headlong into hot PR water with Google Instant’s new security feature.

Type in an inappropriate keyword and the results disappear. You have to hit enter to see your search results.

Terms like bisexual and lesbian turn the search feature off.

That’ll please parents but irritate vocal minorities that think they’re being discriminated against.

All this from a corporation that is known for a great many things, but censorship isn’t normally one of them.

Word is, Google is trying to prevent people (read, children) seeing pornographic or violent material unless they really, really want to see it.

Who’s Who In The Tech Zoo

Who’s Who In The Tech Zoo

Mainstream media have served up to the American public a mixed view of how information technology influences society, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism.

Over the past year, messages about the promise of technology making life easier and awe about new gadgets have competed in the news with worries about privacy, child predators, shrinking attention spans and danger behind the wheel.

The most prevalent message about the influence of technology is positive – the idea that is makes life easier and more productive.

Chomping close at its heels, though, is the sense that the convenience has risk, to privacy and children, themes that gobbled up almost a fifth of media coverage.

These themes form part of the findings of the study that examined 437 tech-related stories that appeared across 52 different news outlets.

Happy 12th Birthday Google

Happy 12th Birthday Google

Happy Birthday Google, which turns 12 years old on 27 September 2010. The California-based company was first incorporated as a privately held corporation on 27 September 1998.

To mark the occasion, users of Google’s home search page are met with a Wayne Thiebaud cake, reproduced by permission of VAGA, Visual Artists and Galleries Association. Most of Thiebaud’s cakes were painted in the 1950s and 1960s.

Although Thiebaud is associated with the Pop art movement due to his interest in objects of mass culture, his work is earlier than Andy Warhol.

Over its 12 years, Google has many milestones.
